Healthy Hot Chocolate

The quintessential Winter warmer, in my opinion, is a mug of hot chocolate. I'll find myself when it's particularly cold, snuggling up to one of these a few times a week. If it's not a hot choco, i'll also be staying cosy with my 2 Minute Turmeric Latte.

But I do warn not hot chocolate is the same, hence the idea of this being a 'healthy' hot choco. For example, one brand that rhymes with Bradbury has a popular drinking chocolate product with sugar as its first ingredient uses thickeners and nondescript flavours - delicious.


In fact per 15g of drinking chocolate used, 11.6g is sugar, which is just shy of 3 teaspoons of refined sugar per serve. Yikes!

So in the spirit of drinking yummy things, without consuming unwanted added refined sugar I have created this beauty.


Makes 1

Ingredients

  • 250ml milk of choice; cow's, lactose free, almond, soy etc.

  • 1-2 tsp raw cacao powder

  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

  • Pinch of salt

  • Optional add ins: 1/2 tsp of maca, 1/2 tsp mesquite, pinch or cayenne pepper

  • Optional rice malt syrup, maple syrup or stevia

Method

  1. In a saucepan (or microwave) heat up milk until desired temperature.

  2. Whisk in cacao, cinnamon, salt and additional add-ins such as mesquite, maca, cayenne pepper.

  3. Stir in sweetener of choice to taste, if desired

  4. Sprinkle on some extra cacao, serve and enjoy.
